As part of my profession, I’m always striving to serve my patients better. I spent all day last Friday and Saturday learning and becoming certified in the SFMA (Selective Functional Movement Assessment). This system is part of the FMS (Functional Movement Screen) which has caught on in the recent years as a way to screen athletes for poor movement patterns which may be an indicator of possible injury risk. The SFMA is the medical component of the FMS and is a useful tool to help distinguish mobility and motor control issues at various levels of the body through movement pattern analysis. In doing so, it lets practitioners can be even more precise in applying treatment so that we aren’t just chasing pain. While I find that it tends to be used more with the athletic population, it serves weekend warriors and even the non-athletic population well as most of us could benefit from improved movement patterns. I look forward to applying this to help you move better!
